Themeasures implemented in the riparianareaof theNestosRiver inGreecearebasedon the
principlesofrestoringthenaturalvegetation.Themeasureshavebeenappliedacrossanareaof
280hectares,witha total of79,343plantshavingbeenplanted. Thewater is retained through
improvementof thesoil andchanges in theriparianvegetation. Thus, soil erosionandnutrient
leaching are controlled, and the stream velocity during flood events is
reduced. Amonitoring programme of the vegetation restorationworks
of the riparian forest of Nestos has been set-upwith themain purpose
of
evaluating the success of the restoration
of the vegetation structure.
The programmemonitors both
biotic and abiotic parameters
(vegetation,
meteorological, hydrological and soil parameters, landscape evolution,
etc.). Themonitoring programme also aims to assess the
soil preparation
techniques
, production and management of
planting material
and plant

practices
afterplanting. Theseelementswill beusedwhendesigning
the restorationof

of the riparian forest in the future.
